Sergio's Valet Service has a staff of four: Sergio and his three employees, George, Liza, and Meeta. George, Sergio's most senior and trusted employee, until recently had Kaiser coverage through his wife's employer and would like to find a way to continue that coverage. Liza and Meeta don't care which type of health coverage they have as long as they don't pay too much from their paychecks towards a plan. Sergio's wife feels strongly about keeping access to their family's non-Kaiser physicians.
A purchasing alliance may allow Sergio to meet everyone's needs. By using a purchasing alliance, each employee would be able to choose among a menu of options: HMO and PPO; Kaiser and non-Kaiser; lower cost and higher cost. Sergio can provide a fixed-dollar contribution (perhaps a percentage of the lowest-cost option), leaving each employee responsible for the additional cost associated with his or her plan choice. An added bonus is that the arrangement is easy to administer: Sergio's business will receive a single monthly bill for all the employees' coverage.
